Críticas 'A timely book which offers a simple and clear introduction to the theory of general relativity and its modern applications to cosmology, astrophysical black holes, and the exciting field of gravitational wave astronomy.' David Tong, University of Cambridge'This book stands out for its efficiency in balancing text with practical mathematics while still maintaining clarity, breadth, and up-to-date coverage of cosmology and gravitational wave sources. On balance, this may be the best current textbook on the market for an undergraduate course on general relativity for physical science majors.' Eric G. Blackman, University of Rochester'Mike Guidry has done an amazing job in presenting the most up-to-date aspects of general relativity, using a refreshing intuitive approach based on a variety of observable phenomena in physics and astronomy. A highly recommended text!' Djordje Minic, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University'Guidry's new book is a winner. While its depth and coverage are superior to most other textbooks at this level, it manages to stay pedagogical and friendly throughout. Impressive!' Rafael López-Mobilia, University of Texas, San Antonio Reseña del editor Einstein's general theory of relativity is widely considered to be one of the most elegant and successful scientific theories ever developed, and it is increasingly being taught in a simplified form at advanced undergraduate level within both physics and mathematics departments. Due to the increasing interest in gravitational physics, in both the academic and the public sphere, driven largely by widely-publicised developments such as the recent observations of gravitational waves, general relativity is also one of the most popular scientific topics pursued through self-study. Modern General Relativity introduces the reader to the general theory of relativity using an example-based approach, before describing some of its most important applications in cosmology and astrophysics, such as gamma-ray bursts, neutron stars, black holes, and gravitational waves. With hundreds of worked examples, explanatory boxes, and end-of-chapter problems, this textbook provides a solid foundation for understanding one of the towering achievements of twentieth-century physics. Descripción del libro This book introduces undergraduate and graduate students to the topic of general relativity, stressing the connection to modern topics such as gamma-ray bursts, black holes, and gravitational waves. Mathematically self-contained and with hundreds of examples and problems throughout, it is suitable for learning in a classroom setting or through self-study. Biografía del autor Mike Guidry is Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His current research is focused on the development of new algorithms to solve large sets of differential equations, and applications of Lie algebras to strongly-correlated electronic systems. He has written five textbooks and authored more than 120 journal publications on a broad variety of topics. He previously held the role of Lead Technology Developer for several major college textbooks in introductory physics, astronomy, biology, genetics, and microbiology. He has won multiple teaching awards and is responsible for a variety of important science outreach initiatives.

A first course in general relativity schutz then various metrics relevant to cosmology and black holes are discussed including the friedmannlemaitre metric the expanding universe and the kerr metric rotating black holes it was quite fascinating to see the actual mathematical derivations of many of the key concepts and findings of general relativity that i had previously only read about in popular science books
